Quick take
- Zero Company uses turn-based squad tactics and three action points.
- The Den, Operations, bonds, and optional permadeath are published systems.
What Zero Company adds to that formula
Zero Company’s published loop also includes the Den as a fixed base, Operations on a Galaxy Map, mission cycles, character bonds, and a small third-person free-roam phase before combat in story missions. Hawks and Operators can be customized across appearance, specializations, talents, loadouts, and abilities. Permadeath is enabled by default but can be turned off. These are the useful differences to compare, rather than claiming identical rules or progression.
Mechanics to compare before buying
| Dimension | Zero Company published system | How it affects the XCOM comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Turn economy | Three action points per operator. | More granular movement, attack, and ability decisions are explicitly documented. |
| Campaign hub | The Den, cycles, and Galaxy Map Operations. | Planning exists outside combat through Operations and mission choices. |
| Squad identity | Authored and custom Operators with bonds and customization. | The Star Wars crew and relationships are a major stated focus. |
| Failure setting | Permadeath on by default, toggleable off. | Campaign stakes are configurable rather than a fixed assumption. |
